「2023 디지털 유산 국제 학술대회」 개최(11.23.~24. / 한국과학기술원 학술정보관)

  문화재청(청장 최응천)은 한국과학기술원(총장 이광형), 이코모스 한국위원회와 함께 11월 23일부터 24일까지 한국과학기술원(이하 ‘카이스트’) 학술정보관(대전 유성구)에서 ‘데이터로서의 유산: 보존관리 및 활용을 위한 데이터 중심의 전략(Data-driven heritage conservation, management and utilization)’을 주제로 국내외 전문가 8개국 20명이 참여하는 「2023 디지털 유산 국제 학술대회」를 개최한다.

올해로 네 번째를 맞는 「디지털 유산 국제 학술대회」는 디지털 기술을 적용한 국내외 유산의 기록·보존·관리·활용 등 관련 사례를 공유하고, 전문가 간의 교류를 통한 발전방안을 모색하기 위해 개최되는 연례 국제회의이다.

학술대회는 이틀간 각각 두 개의 분과(세션)로 진행되며, 각 분과는 다시 국내외 전문가들의 강연과 주제발표, 토론으로 진행되는 오전 분과와 전문가들 간의 교류, 실습 등으로 진행되는 오후 분과로 나뉜다.
먼저 23일에는 디지털유산에 문화경관적 관점을 적용한 중국 사례, 3차원 모델링 현황 등을, 24일에는 문화유산 재해 복구에 활용되는 3차원 기술 등 디지털 기술로 유산을 보존·관리하고, 재난 상황에서 훼손되거나 파손된 유산을 복구한 해외의 여러 사례를 통해 디지털 기술의 중추적인 역할을 조명하고, 향후 관련 분야를 이끌어갈 신진 전문가들의 역할에 대해 논의한다.

또한, 국내 대학생 80여 명을 대상으로 ▲ 문화유산 해설에 인공지능(AI) 기술을 접목한 ‘인공지능(AI) 음성 도슨트 워크숍’을 진행한다. 자세한 일정과 내용은 학술대회 누리집(https://www.isdh2023.org)을 통해 확인 가능하다.

한편, 문화재청과 카이스트는, 지난 9월 유산의 기록화 분야를 담당하는 국제단체인 CIPA 헤리티지 다큐멘테이션이 주최하는 학술행사인 ‘2025 제30회 ICOMOS CIPA 국제학술대회’의 서울 유치에도 성공해 교토(2009), 타이페이(2015), 베이징(2021, 비대면)에 이어 아시아에서는 네 번째로 개최할 예정이다.

문화재청은 이번 행사와 향후 CIPA 국제학술대회 개최를 통해 디지털 기술을 접목한 우리나라의 국가유산 보존·관리·활용 수준이 한 단계 도약할 것으로 기대하며, 앞으로도 전 세계의 다양한 전문가와의 협력을 강화해 나갈 것이다.

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (Administrator of CHA, Eung-chon Choi) in collaboration with the Digital Heritage Lab in the Graduate School of Culture Technology at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (President of KAIST, Kwang Hyung Lee), will host the 2023 International Symposium on Digital Heritage with the theme of 'Cultural Heritage as Data: A Data-Driven Approach to Advancing Digital Methods,' starting from November 23rd to 24th at the Yang Seungtaik Auditorium in the Academic Cultural Complex at KAIST. The symposium will feature presentations and discussions by 20 experts from 8 countries.

This marks the fourth annual International Symposium on Digital Heritage, which aims to share digital technology's application in documenting, conserving, managing, interpreting, disseminating, and utilizing cultural heritage here and abroad. The symposium is jointly organized by CHA in collaboration with KAIST and the Korean National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS-Korea). It has been drawing growing interest, both domestically and internationally, as digital technology continues to advance and integrate into various facets of cultural heritage.

In this year's symposium, numerous international experts in digital heritage will present and discuss their research topics. Professor Sander Münster from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena in Germany, representing the European Time Machine Project, will deliver a presentation titled "A Current State of 3D Modeling for Humanities Research and Education." Professor Mario Santana Quintero from Carleton University in Canada, who formerly served as the Secretary-General of ICOMOS International, will give a lecture entitled "Opportunity to Change – Digital Technologies in Shifting Presentation Narratives and Conservation of Cultural Heritage." Additionally, Joe Kallas from Pennsylvania State University in the United States, actively involved in the recovery and assessment of cultural heritage affected by disasters such as the Ukraine war and earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, will present "Innovate to Elevate – 3D Technology's Impact on Disaster Recovery." Furthermore, there will be a workshop titled "Artificial Intelligence (AI) Voice Docent for Museums," designed for over 80 Korean university students, where AI technology will be applied to cultural heritage interpretation process in museums. Furthermore, in September of this year, the CHA and KAIST successfully secured the hosting privilege for the 30th ICOMOS CIPA International Symposium in 2025. This event is organized by CIPA Heritage Documentation, the international scientific committee for heritage documentation in the field of cultural heritage. The symposium will take place in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
* CIPA Heritage Documentation: Among 28 international scientific committees under ICOMOS, the 'Comité International de Photogrammétrie Architecturale (CIPA)' was established in 1968. It later assumed a specialized role in the field of cultural heritage documentation and adopted its current name.


The CIPA International Symposium, which has been held every two years since 1971, is the largest academic event where experts and professionals from various countries gather to share the latest research and technology in fields such as archaeology, architecture, conservation science, and digital heritage. Hosting the CIPA International Symposium in Asia for the fourth time, following Kyoto (2009), Taipei (2015), and Beijing (2021, held virtually), is a significant milestone.

The CHA anticipates that this event, along with the hosting of the 2025 CIPA International Symposium, will lead to a significant advancement in the field of cultural heritage conservation and management by incorporating digital technology. They have also expressed their commitment to enhancing reputation of the Republic of Korea and its role in expanding cooperation with experts from around the world.
